For the 6th consecutive year, the Boise Young Rider Development Squad (BYRDS) has again been recognized as a “Center of Excellence” by the governing body for cycling in the United States, USA Cycling. The USA Cycling Center of Excellence (COE) designation is awarded to select junior and under-23 development teams that excel in the development of young cycling athletes. Centers of Excellence meet strict requirements and may qualify for grants from the USA Cycling Development Foundation based upon quantified results. Current COE programs have consistently demonstrated the ability to develop young riders into nationally competitive athletes, and annually place riders in USA Cycling Regional and National development camps, and in the USA Cycling National Development Program.
BYRDS is an after school cycling program designed for kids in the community to participate with youth of similar age and ability in the sport of cycling. The Program is designed to offer youth structured access to cycling including organized rides, training, safety and skills, nutritional education, cycling etiquette, time management, personal management, leadership skills and mentorship, as well as sharing equipment such as bikes and other cycling resources to riders and families in need of support. The Program works with youth as young as age 6 through high school to participate and develop in the disciplines of road cycling, mountain biking and cyclocross riding.
